Thanks to your support, we brought the voices of genealogists to Capitol Hill to speak up for access to the records that matter most. Now we invite you to be part of the work that makes efforts like that possible.Â
The Massachusetts Genealogical Council (MGC) is powered by volunteers—genealogists like you who care deeply about access, education, and community.Â
Whether you have a little time or a lot of passion, there’s a role for you! MGC is looking for volunteers to fill some critical positions on its board.Â
President: As President, you’ll lead our board meetings, help guide the MGC’s direction and represent us in official matters. You’ll also support our committees and share a summary of our yearly progress. This role is perfect for someone who enjoys leadership and wants to make a meaningful impact on the genealogy community.Â
Vice President: The Vice President supports the President and steps in when needed. You’ll also help grow our organization by building partnerships with other genealogy and historical groups. This role is a great fit if you enjoy connecting with people and have an eye for organizational policies and partnerships.Â
Program Director (M:O.R.E): Do you love planning events and supporting education? As Program Director for the MGC: Open Records and Education (M:O.R.E.) program, you’ll organize webinars and other learning opportunities. You’ll handle everything from booking speakers to collecting feedback—ideal for someone organized and passionate about genealogy education.Â
Secretary: The Secretary keeps us on track and informed. You’ll take minutes, handle official notices, keep important records organized, and make sure communication runs smoothly. This role is essential to keeping the board informed and the MGC running efficiently.Â
Communications Director: Help us share our message! As Communications Director, you’ll promote events, manage our marketing materials, and help keep our look and voice consistent. You’ll also support advocacy efforts and help raise awareness of our mission. This is a great role for someone creative and outgoing.Â
General Qualifications for Board MembershipÂ
Serving on the board is a rewarding way to give back to the genealogy community. While specific skills help, the most important things are passion, commitment, and teamwork. Ideal candidates will have:Â
An interest in genealogy, history, or public recordsÂ
Willingness to attend and participate in quarterly board meetings Â
A commitment to supporting the society’s mission and valuesÂ
Good communication and collaboration skillsÂ
Basic computer skills (email, word processing, online forms)Â
Experience with event planning, outreach, or nonprofit work (a plus, but not required)Â
Enthusiasm for learning and helping others discover their rootsÂ
Â
Thinking About Getting Involved but Not Sure You’re Qualified?Â
You're not alone! Once many of us on the board felt the same way. But here’s the truth: you don’t need to be an expert to make a difference. If you’re curious, enthusiastic, and care about genealogy and community, you already have what it takes. Â
Â
Every board member started somewhere, and we’re all here to support each other. Whether you’re comfortable organizing, writing, meeting new people, or just lending a hand, we’ll help you find a role that fits.Â
Â
Serving on the board is a chance to learn new skills, make great connections, and help others discover their family history. If you’re willing to help, we’re excited to have you.Â
Â
Let’s grow together—no experience required, just a shared passion.Â
If you’re interested in getting involved with MGC, contact one of us on the Nominating Committee: Jessica Neaves (development@massgencouncil.org) or Mark Doherty (treasurer@massgencoucil.org).Â
